“Old Community, New Green”——“Ocean• Thanksgiving Beijing” Public Green Environment Protection Action is a large public social environmental protection activity held by Sino-ocean Land with consultants such as Capital Economic Reports of the Financial Channel of BTV, Beijing Volunteers Association Foreign Enterprise Branch, and Beijing Green Olympic Green Action team.
“Ocean• Thanksgiving Beijing” is a traditional activity of Sino-ocean Land aiming at granting gratitude to customers and people of all walks of life who gave Sino-ocean Land help and support. For a long time, the activity has created a good reputation among customers. In 2006 the activity was different from that of the previous years. While adhering to feedback to customers, social welfare contents were added to return to the society and answering to the recall of the government’s Green Olympics. The campaign shifted attention to the Old communities with relatively poor environmental conditions which need more attention and more help. Sino-ocean Land contributed with investment and efforts to organize experts for guidance of green living, organize volunteers to participate in the creation of green living, and organize media to publicize green living. It advocated, absorbed and strived for more enterprises’ participation in this activity to contribute their own efforts to raise environmental protection awareness of the whole society.
“Old Communities, New Green; Small Transformation, Large Environmental Protection; No waste, Sustainable; All Beijing, One New” is the slogan. The original intention was to mobilize people of the communities to participate in the transformation and to improve the living environment of old communities through simple and effective means. Since July 13, 2006 on which the activity was launched, community environmental protection brochure will be made and sent to 2,500 Old communities in Beijing. Organizers of the activity gradually visited and inspected more than 50 old communities, and succeeded in implementation of the environmental transformation in more than 10 Old communities.
In 2007, “Old Community, New Green” will still be committed to helping the old community to improve the environment and will adopt more active forms for more communities’ participation to make residents take the initiative to promote environmental protection. Creating “Ocean Green Fund” is an important part of “Old Community, New Green”——“Ocean• Thanksgiving Beijing” Public Green Environment Protection Action. It is planned to collect community project officially in Beijing on April 22, namely on the Earth Day. The “Ocean Green Fund” sets up respectively “Chinese Rose Award” of RMB 100,000, “Magnolia Award” of RMB 50,000, “Lilac Award” of RMB20,000 and “Honeysuckle Award” of RMB10,000. There are a total of 22 items of fund and at least 22 communities will have direct access to environmental protection fund.
The activity always adheres to simultaneous approach of “transformation of hardware” and “software development”. A large amount of community transformation attempts such as increased rainwater collection dedicated device, laying water penetrating brick, planting native plants, establishment of composting column were conducted and environmental protection themes such as planting native plants, water recycling, and use of renewable energy were applied. Meanwhile, the activity widely publicized knowledge on environmental protection, environmental philosophy and green methods in the community involved in. Whether in improving the micro circulatory system of the residents’ living environment or in rising environmental awareness of residents, organizers put a lot of energy and injected a lot of money. And they have achieved a good social repercussion. According to incomplete statistics, there are about 140,000 people directly and indirectly benefit from it. Participants are continuously increasing. Currently several enterprises participate in or is participating in the activity. The event not only conducted the practical implementation of the environmental protection transformation of old communities, but also established a new model for environmental protection community. It is worthy of being promoted in the whole society.
